Louis Sachar (March 20, 1954)

Louis Sachar is an American young-adult mystery-comedy author. He is best known for writing the novel “Holes”, “The Wayside School” series.

His intricate plots, quirky humor, and themes of justice, friendship, and destiny led him to win the Newbery Medal.

The idea for Holes came to Sachar in 1991 after he moved to Austin, Texas. He experienced the intense heat, which led him to imagine a harsh, hot place for his characters.

The book explores destiny, history, racial injustice, and self-trust through Stanley Yelnats’s story at Camp Green Lake.

On April 11, 2003, Disney’s film adaptation of Holes was released, which earned $71.4 million worldwide.

Sachar himself wrote the screenplay, at the request of the film’s director Andrew Davis, and has a brief on-screen cameo during one of the flashback scenes.

Story Plot

You are Entering Camp Green Lake

Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake, a dry and dusty place where boys are punished by digging holes every day. Wearing orange uniforms, the boys dig under the hot sun while guards watch them closely.The camp claims the work builds character, but Stanley soon feels there is a deeper reason behind all the digging.

Caveman and Zero

As days pass, Stanley makes friends with other boys at the camp, especially a boy nicknamed Zero. They rest together between digging holes and slowly build trust and friendship. Through hard work and shared struggles, Stanley begins to feel less alone, and the boys support each other to survive camp life.

Zero runs away

When Zero runs away into the desert, Stanley decides to follow him, even though it is dangerous. Stanley carries Zero across the rocky land, showing true courage and loyalty. Their journey strengthens their bond and helps them uncover the truth about their past and their families’ long-standing curse.

The Hidden Treasure

In the end, Stanley and Zero discover a buried treasure hidden at Camp Green Lake. The treasure proves the camp’s secrets and finally brings justice. Their hard work pays off, the curse is broken, and both boys return home as friends, their lives changed for the better.
